In a series of three half-day virtual meetings, this workshop will focus on current applications and future opportunities of Aerosol and Clouds, Convection, and Precipitation (ACCP) observations to support air quality and disaster applications. The workshop will bring together representatives from federal and state operational agencies, private companies and boundary organizations to discuss how NASA ACCP aerosol products could be better leveraged to inform decision-making activities. The workshop will also provide an opportunity for end users to engage with the ACCP Designated Observable Applications Study Team to address current satellite uses and challenges as well as future satellite needs.

Objectives

The main objectives of the workshop include:

• Provide opportunities to expand community engagement on satellite applications and needs, with a focus on air quality.
• Reach into communities that are expanding their capabilities of using satellite data as input into their systems.
• Provide overviews and opportunities for discussions on how current satellite data products are being used for health and air quality applications.
• Articulate the challenges and barriers from the community related to the use of satellite data related to health and air quality applications.
• Discussion of current and future satellite needs and gaps and how products from the ACCP study may be used by this community.
• Increase awareness of NASA products for this community of users for future research and applications.

Workshop Outcomes

• Identify community needs to ensure use of ACCP observations once they become available (latency, format, training, etc).
• Development of highlights and case studies illustrating how air quality communities are utilizing NASA data and products for decision making.
• White paper reporting on lessons-learned from the workshop of the current and future status of NASA Earth Observations for federal, state, and private health and air quality applications.

Agenda Description

Day 1 (1:00 pm - 5:00 pm EDT, March 16, 2021)
Focus topic: Introduction and overview + ACCP + New and emerging research The first day will include an introductory session to outline current status of the study and relevant products from NASA's Earth science missions, as well as an overview of the Aerosols, Clouds, Convection, and Precipitation Study with an emphasis on Applications. This will be followed by presentations highlighting new and emerging research and examples in Air Quality applications. The day will conclude with an opportunity to answer questions from the community. Day 2 (1:00 pm - 5:00 pm EDT, March 17, 2021)
Focus topic: Air quality forecasting and monitoring Day two will focus on two panel sessions consisting of presentations from the perspective of current and emerging end-users followed by a discussion with guided questions to the group about data needs, opportunities, and the view forward. This will include opportunities for community feedback on the ACCP science and applications potential products. Day 3 (1:00 pm - 5:00 pm EDT, March 18, 2021)
Focus topics: Air pollution and public health and wildfire smoke, dust storms and volcanic hazards The third day will focus on the needs of the public health, wildfire smoke, dust storms and aviation hazard communities. The objective is to develop an understanding of data types, products, and latencies, and decision-making and training needs for these communities. The process by which Early Adopters are selected will be outlined and participants will have an opportunity to provide feedback.
