Get Involved with AOS Applications

There are many ways to get involved with AOS Applications. Since AOS is expected to launch in the late 2020s - early 2030s, opportunities will evolve over time. All AOS applied science and application events are designed to connect you with the AOS Project and the Science and Applications Team members and focus on how AOS data may help to serve the needs of your community.

The example timeline below applies to the 2029 AOS-Storm orbit satellite launch. The AOS-Sky launch will have a similar timeline but launches in 2031. The timeline is provided to demonstrate when the community can get involved.

Timeline
Mission Activities Applications Activities How can I participate?
The Concept Study activities include feasibility studies, technology needs analyses, engineering systems assessments, and analyses of alternatives that need to be performed before a specific project concept emerges. This phase ended 04 2021
Mission Activities Applications Activities How can I participate?
During Pre-Phase A, the program initiates development of the plans and resources required for evaluating the feasibility of the proposed mission concept(s) and how well the concept(s) fulfill the program's needs and objectives. Characterize communities of practice (those that use satellite data) and communities of potential (those that do not yet use satellite data)
Mission Activities Applications Activities How can I participate?
The purpose of Phase A is to develop a proposed mission/system architecture that is credible and responsive to program requirements and constraints on the project, including resources. Continue community engagement through seminars, focus groups and workshops to articulate data needs and challenges as well as grow the user community. Develop a Project Applications Plan.
Mission Activities Applications Activities How can I participate?
During Phase B, the project team completes their technology development, engineering prototyping, heritage hardware and software assessments, and other risk-mitigation activities. Implement Project Application Plan to build applications user base and launch Early Adopter Program.
Mission Activities Applications Activities How can I participate?
Phase C includes completion of final system design and the fabrication, assembly, and test of components, assemblies, and subsystems. Continue Early Adopter (EA) Program and effectively engage with EAs and community. Conduct EA workshops, seminars, and short courses.
Mission Activities Applications Activities How can I participate?
Phase D includes system assembly, integration, and test (AI&T), verification/certification, prelaunch activities, launch, and checkout. Continue Early Adopter (EA) Program and effectively engage with EAs and community. Conduct EA workshops, seminars, and short courses.
Mission Activities Applications Activities How can I participate?
The start of Phase E marks the transition from system development and acquisition activities to primarily system operations and sustainment activities. Communicate applications and societal benefits and continue engagement with EAs.

Attend AOS Events

  • Applications Seminars are open to anyone and highlight a specific application or user community. Formats include lectures and thematic panel discussions. Recordings of past events can be found below.
  • Thematic Workshops are conducted to assess the needs of particular communities and discuss opportunities for enabling applications. Registration is typically required for these events. Recordings of past events can be found below.
  • AOS Community Forums are meetings tailored to the public and hosted by members of AOS teams to present the current status of the mission. Participants can request access to join these telecons by sending an email to aos-comments@lists.nasa.gov.
  • Town Halls provide an interface for questions to be answered by the AOS Science and Application Teams.
